What is VoIP?
VoIP (voice over internet protocol) is the future when it comes to making/receiving phone calls via your landline phone (whether business or at home). Instead of plugging your phone into the socket on the wall, the VoIP phone will connect digitally through your internet - whether directly through cables to your broadband router or wirelessly using Wi-Fi - thus allowing you to make and receive phones calls. This is all without having to pay for line rental.
Why do I need to move to VoIP technology?
Openreach is the company that maintains the telephone cables, ducts, cabinets and exchanges that connect nearly all homes and businesses in the United Kingdom to the national broadband and telephone network.
Back in 2018, Openreach announced that the way in which a phone call is made from a landline will need to change. This is directly from their website:
"Copper wires and analogue signals have served our nation for over a century. They’ve kept hospitals, schools and emergency services connected, they’ve powered card machines on our high streets and delivered some of the most important phone conversations we’ve ever had with our family and friends.
But - because it's been around for a long time - it’s no longer as efficient as it could be. Replacement parts are hard to come by and it fails more often than we’d like, meaning it doesn’t provide the world-class service that we need it to. This is why Openreach will retire the whole of the analogue phone network by the end of 2025.
Everyone in the UK will have to upgrade to a digital phone line, providing them with a greener, faster and more reliable service. This means landline voice calls will soon be transmitted digitally - in the same way your broadband works. You may already have used digital services such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype and WhatsApp, which all rely on the internet to connect. By modernising the telephone and broadband network, we’ll be able to do more than ever before, helping the UK to stay competitive on the global stage."
When do I need to move to VoIP technology?
By 2025, all copper-based lines that connect to the cabinet down the road will be switched off and calls will be made through the internet. It may seem a long way off and you may be thinking `I will wait until I have to move`, however - before the switch off takes place - telephone services will be hit by `Stop-Sell`.
The term stop sell is used by Openreach to signify when the sale of certain Openreach products will end. By May 2023, over 570 telecom exchanges will no longer be able to provide certain Openreach products. Restrictions will be in place on all traditional copper lines. Business and domestic customers will no longer be able to add new features including caller display, call barring and the 1471 service.

Our advice is to move sooner rather than later.
